The John Howard Society which is focused on reintegrating people into the community following incarceration is pleased with a new set of standards for emergency shelter services released by the provincial government.
Cindy Murphy says the standards were already being employed at many of the larger and more established shelters in the province, but she says it’s important to have set standards so that all operators, including new entrants and smaller, private operators, are on the same page.
Murphy says she was especially pleased to see an emphasis on appropriate training for staff.
“So having appropriate levels of staff, so there’s appropriate levels of supervision happening within the shelter system, and certainly having the skill set to be able to deal with people who have complex needs.”
