A cabinet shuffle is coming to fill the gap left by the resignation of Newfoundland MP Seamus O’Regan.
The member for St. John’s South-Mount Pearl today confirmed that that he will step down as the Minister of Labour and Seniors effective tomorrow.
He will stay on as the MP until the next general election. O’Regan posted a lengthy outline of his accomplishments in a variety of portfolios and indicates that he will miss his staff and working with the Prime Minister and with the civil service as a whole.

His reason for stepping down came “to be a better husband, son, uncle and friend” and that his position “deserves a lot of time in order to do it well.”
He concludes his statement saying that things have been hectic since taking office in 2015 and that “nerves are rubbed raw.”
He also cautions that Canadians have a choice, “to unite not divide, create not destroy and build rather than break this great country.”
Seamus O’Regan admitted to Tim Powers on VOCM, that political life takes a personal toll, and while in the past he cast a jaundiced eye towards those who used family and friends as the reason for leaving public service, he says it’s absolutely true.
“It’s been ten years” says O’Regan “my husband more or less said ‘okay, you know.’ We spend an awful lot of time apart, and we’d like to be together a lot more than we are, that’s really it.”
