Kurt Churchill, who beat a murder charge yesterday, has been granted bail following his arrest on a charge of sexual assault in Toronto.
Churchill appeared in Toronto bail court this morning by video from an area detention centre, dressed in orange jail attire.
Also appearing by video were his Toronto lawyer, James Foy, and Churchill’s mother, who was approved as a surety to ensure her son follows all conditions of his release.
They include living at his home in Portugal Cove, not to possess weapons, and report weekly by phone to the Toronto police.
His latest run-in with the law is alleged to have occurred in early August at a Toronto hotel, but the details, spelled out during the bail hearing, are banned from publication, as is the norm.
He’s also charged with making death threats and assaulting police officers.
Court was informed that Churchill spent a lot of time on release while awaiting trial for murder, under his mother’s watch, without incident.
The murder charge was stayed yesterday at Supreme Court in St. John’s.
Another factor in his release today was the fact that Churchill has no criminal record, with the murder charge and past drug allegations dismissed due to delays getting to trial.
Churchill is now en route back to this province, with a designation filed that allows his lawyer to appear on his behalf in Toronto.
His next court date is set for October 8th.
