NL Health Services is investigating an outbreak of syphilis in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region.
As of early October, 19 cases have been confirmed, with more cases under investigation. That’s concerning according to Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kevin Lam, given that the number of confirmed cases in the last decade totaled just 16.
He told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly the current outbreak mirrors trends across Canada and globally.
Health officials believe contributing factors include decreased condom use, and access to testing and treatment. Syphilis is a serious illness that can cause severe damage to the body and the brain if left untreated. It can also be passed on to babies in utero. “We’re monitoring the situation,” according to Dr. Lam, “and putting in control measures.”
