The Mayor of Happy Valley-Goose Bay says he wants the province to look at a subsidy for travel to and from Labrador from the island.
It comes on the heels of a report from the Goose Bay Airport Corporation that prices have jumped in the big land more than anywhere else in the country.
George Andrews says the move could spark the economy in Labrador.
“I just wonder, you know, how much dollar value could be injected into the different economies, whether it’s tourists or, you know, business travel, to be able to look at a subsidy and see if that makes a difference in terms of, you know, people’s ability or increased travel,” he said.
Lake Melville MHA Perry Trimper says it’s on the government’s radar, but made no commitments this week.
“But from other areas that we could look at, Quebec, deeper pockets, a lot more people, but they just put in place, I think it’s in the vicinity of a hundred million dollar program to subsidize travel throughout their province. Do we have 100 million to spare and would it cost that much? I don’t know. And how much do we need to drop the fares down?” he told Tim Powers.
