Postal workers have given their union an overwhelming strike mandate, but whether that means a possible halt in postal activities before Christmas remains to be seen.
Local Canadian Union of Postal Workers president Craig Dyer says members voted more than 95 per cent in support of strike action.
Tomorrow, Nov. 1, is the final day of a 21-day cooling-off period as negotiations to reach a new collective agreement continue.
Dyer says members are stressed, but whether they go on strike is dependent on a number of factors.
“As of tomorrow, the union can serve a 72-hour notice of intent to strike. That doesn’t mean we are going to strike,” says Dyer.
He notes the same is true if Canada Post chooses to lock members out.
Dyer says in the meantime the corporation has made another offer to the union, which at first blush does not appear to be much different from their first offer.
“Our people in Ottawa are reviewing it,” says Dyer, “but right now it doesn’t seem like the corporation is really negotiating in good faith.”
