A father and local filmmaker’s new NFB feature documentary is touring the province this month.
Justin Simms says his documentary “Sons” was inspired by the birth of his own son in 2016, and questions surrounding father-son relationships and what it means to be a father.
Simms says these were some of the questions he was asking himself amid rising global tensions and a shift to the political right.
“The conversation around what a man was, and what masculinity is, and what it should represent, suddenly became controversial.”
He was also very affected by a series of school shootings in the States around that time.
“I was always kind of flummoxed as to how we lose these points, because when you look at a small baby in your arms, they are totally innocent and they are completely empty; they have no ideologies. Where do they go wrong on the path?”
The film will be screened at the Clarenville Twin Cinemas on November 20 at 8:00 p.m. and at the Garrick Theatre in Bonavista on November 21 at 7:00
