A man recently jailed as a long-term offender for random and violent sex crimes is going to trial again, this time for acts allegedly committed against guards at HMP.
Stephen Hopkins was sentenced in April to six-and-a-half years for sexually assaulting a teenage girl in her Cowan Heights home.
That followed convictions for incidents involving female joggers near Confederation Building.
With time served, he was due for release in January, followed by five years’ supervision as a long-term offender—with an upgrade to dangerous offender and potential life sentence waiting, should he offend again.
But it’s alleged he did just that, despite the risk, at HMP this past June.
Hopkins faces five counts of committing indecent acts—namely exposing and touching himself in the presence of female guards.
On Friday, he pleaded not guilty to all charges and elected to be tried again, in Supreme Court, by judge alone.
And, once again, he plans to represent himself—something that proved tedious and time-consuming last time around.
Hopkins is scheduled to be arraigned in Supreme Court on December 2.
