The NDP is asking questions of the education department about parents at a school in Labrador City, the party says, who were asked to start paying fees to help fund supplies.
Labrador West MHA Jordan Brown broached the issue in the House of Assembly Yesterday.
He says parents of students at Menihek High School were recently sent emails saying they will have to start paying “whole school” and “course specific” fees to help purchase supplies for art, technology education, and nutrition.
Brown questions education minister Krista Lynn Howell about the situation.
He says the email asked that the fees be paid as soon as possible, in cash, at the school. He asks, “How many schools in this province are forced to rely on payments, in cash, from parents to make up the lack of funding that this government provides for supplies?” Howell responds by saying she’s unaware of the email, but will make “every effort” to address it.
