A man at risk of being deemed a dangerous offender for his criminal, sexual exploits is again railing against the court process.
Stephen Hopkins faces new charges of committing indecent acts, allegedly exposing and touching himself in the presence of female guards at HMP.
That followed his conviction in April for sexually assaulting a teenage girl in her Cowan Heights home, after which he was deemed a long-term offender. That comes with an extra five years of supervision after he completes his jail term.
He was due for a bail review this week, but waived that right, given the current sentence and new charges he’s facing.
But he insists on appearing in court by video from the Pen, instead of in-person.
Supreme Court Justice Trina Simms said that would be up to Corrections officials, which Hopkins called “unorthodox”—a word that more accurately reflects his behaviour before the courts—saying he’s never had to do that before.
Hopkins has regularly questioned and challenged the norm, and continues to insist on representing himself despite the potential indefinite prison sentence he could be facing.
His arraignment on the new charges is still scheduled for Dec. 2nd.
The 33-year-old was due for release from prison in January before those charges were laid.
