The former Mary Queen of Peace Church on Torbay Road is being converted into a Mosque.
The site is undergoing extensive renovations as part of the process.
President of the Muslim Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, Haseen Khan, calls it a big milestone of the Muslin community, which has been looking to an additional place of worship for some time.
Khan says the current Mosque, located on Logy Bay Road, can hold up to 500 people.
However, he says the population in the metro region and across the province has been growing, creating a need for more space.
He says the population has ballooned from 100 in 1990 to 10,000 today. He calls their current Mosque “totally inadequate” to host that number of people. He hopes their first service at the new facility will be held on March 30th.
