Asthma Canada is offering tips on how asthmatics and others can stay safe during forest fire season.
Even those many thousands of miles away from a forest fire can be affected by the smoke which contains harmful pollutants, including fine particulates that can settle deep in the lungs and worsen asthma symptoms.
Asthma Canada says it’s important to keep track of local air quality updates and wildfire information through Environment Canada, other government resources, and reliable local news sources.
Make sure your Asthma Action Plan is updated and includes steps to take in case of emergencies or if your symptoms worsen.
Limit outdoor activities and stay indoors as much as possible, and avoid physical exertion and exercising outdoors during peak pollution periods. If you must go outside wear a well-fitted N95 respirator mask and keep your emergency inhaler with you.
Use air purifiers and filters in your home, and drive with your windows and vents closed, and set your air conditioner to ‘recirculate.’
Asthma Canada says it’s also important to stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids to keep your airways from drying out.
