A walk and fundraiser in memory of a teenager who tragically died in Labrador 13 years ago will be happening again this September.
The story of 14-year-old Burton Winters gripped the hearts of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
In 2012, Winters was on his snowmobile when it became stuck. He walked for 19 kilometres before succumbing to the cold. It took search and rescue teams three days to find him.
The incident led to an inquiry into ground search and rescue, which resulted in numerous recommendations.
Last year, Angus Andersen held the first event in Burton’s memory.
Its purpose is to keep the child’s memory alive and to serve as a fundraiser, through First Light, for Innu and Inuit students pursuing post-secondary education.
Andersen describes last year’s event as an emotional one.
He hopes to one day have multiple walks happening throughout the province, both on the island and in Labrador.
This year’s walk is happening on September 1st on Quidi Vidi Lake.
