Marine Atlantic is in for a busy summer, with about 7,000 more bookings this year compared to last.
And they say the transport of hazardous materials is not putting unusual strain on the system.
The corporation was responding to questions from VOCM News regarding concerns that carrying such cargo has resulted in less capacity overall.
In fact, officials say all four vessels are in operation this summer, with no impact on space for passengers.
Marine Atlantic does complete special crossings with hazardous cargo such as medical oxygen, propane, and construction explosives every week.
They say those trips are an essential part of the supply chain, noting they follow Transport Canada rules and the practice is “no different this year than others.”
The corporation added their summer sailing schedule is designed well in advance with the needs of both commercial and customer traffic in mind.
That said, they remind travellers that with the spike in bookings this year, in part due to the Canada Games, space can be limited on some runs, but also free up on a dime.
