The Canadian Climate Institute says climate change is making the risk of flash flooding worse.
The comments come nearly a week after flooding devastated parts of Texas, leaving a death toll that has climbed well over 100.
Ryan Ness says Newfoundland and Labrador is ahead of other provinces in terms of flood mapping and preparedness.
He says Texas should serve as a warning that better forecasting is needed to protect people and homes.
“The tragedy in Texas is showing is the importance of knowing that a flood is coming,” he told VOCM News.
“So flood forecasting and warning systems, weather monitoring systems, many provinces have them but some don’t, that track incoming weather, predict how much flooding it may cause and provide advanced warnings so people are on alert and then systems to get that information out like the warning systems that use our cell phones.”
