The next few days are going to be hot right across much of the province, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour has launched a new campaign to address what they say is the “growing issue” of excessive heat in the workplace.
The campaign focuses on three main areas: educating workers about the dangers of heat stress and their rights, collecting worker experiences through an online survey, and demanding better protections from both employers and governments.
President Jessica McCormick calls heat exposure a “life-threatening occupational hazard” that can have both short and long-term consequences.
She says as the planet warms, heat stress is becoming a “workplace crisis.”
McCormick says it is affecting people who work indoors and outdoors. She says they want to educate people about their rights in the workplace, make sure they are taking steps to prevent heat stress, and make sure employers are doing all they can to mitigate the impacts as well.
More information about the campaign can be found online.
