While the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival is in financial trouble, it is not unheard of for other events facing similar issues to make a comeback.
An example of one such event is the Mariposa festival in Ontario, which wrapped up this year’s event last weekend.
Music executive Liz Scott has been involved with that festival and getting it off the ground.
She says that about 10 years ago, the festival was struggling.
However, Scott says they started to focus more on the lineup, and were able to get some grants to bring in some bigger names, which kickstarted some more success for them.
Another thing they did, according to Scott, was focus more on families.
She says they started bringing in younger people, recognizing that some people “age out” of attending festivals as they get older because the outdoor elements, terrain, and other factors can make it challenging.
