Newfoundland and Labrador’s Chief Medical Officer of Health says they are watching developments around Lyme disease in the province, but environmental conditions are helping keep the ticks that bring the disease at bay.
Earlier this week, the Paradise Animal Hospital and Wellness Centre revealed that a tick found on an animal tested positive for the disease.
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says Public Health is prepared. They believe that the ticks are coming to the province through migratory birds.
That said, there is positive evidence about the presence of the ticks in the province.
She says they haven’t seen all forms of the ticks, such as in their larval form. She says there is no evidence to show that the ticks can over-winter in the province and set up a permanent population.
Fitzgerald notes that is something that will need to be monitored as the effects of climate change are seen.
