Memorial University hosted a pop-up market yesterday to show that it’s not just the employed who avail of the side-gig business.
The so-called side-hustle showcase featured the side passions of students with MUN’s Centre for Entrepreneurship, but also other students with wares to share in exchange for a little extra cash.
The St. John’s Community Market was filled with booths and tables reminiscent of a flea market—everything from homemade banana breads to detailed crochet creations to custom-designed ball caps.
Most students said they liked the freedom and autonomy that comes with a personal side-hustle compared to a part-time job.
Didan Wedderburn, with the centre for entrepreneurship and organizer of the event, noted side hustles aren’t necessarily for everyone.
“Entrepreneurship is not just about building a business, it’s a mindset, and that’s what we have on display here today,” she said. “Students who are able to juggle multiple things, to deal with risk, to stay up late hours, to bake their cookies or to design some outfits, whatever it is they’re passionate about.”
