RNC have charged a man with manslaughter following the recent death of a 14-year-old boy due to a drug overdose.
Police say it’s a unique and rare situation, where the accused—a 19-year-old man—is being held responsible for supplying the drugs that killed the teenager.
The incident occurred in mid March when officers responded to reports of an unconscious teen at a home in Mount Pearl.
The boy was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The autopsy determined that he took what he thought was Xanax and Dilaudid, which turned out to be a deadly concoction of synthetic opioids.
Warnings about those dangerous counterfeit drugs were issued by police and other agencies earlier this year.
The 19-year-old accused is facing charges of manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, drug possession and trafficking.
The man’s name will be released once the charges are sworn before a judge, expected within a couple of weeks.
Until then he remains free under RNC supervision.
