A number of new fire prevention measures are being implemented at provincial parks, given the severe wildfire situation.
The government says their parks, particularly the ones in forested areas, often contain dry ground debris—such as fallen branches and leaves. And on busy weekends, some parks see upwards of 600 visitors.
To help mitigate any risks, the following changes are being put in place:
Smoking is being restricted to gravelled campsites only, and people are being asked to dispose of cigarettes in water.
Smoking is banned in all day-use parks and park reserves – including the T’Railway provincial park.
Burning devices are banned, including propane fire pits. Gas-burning devices are allowed for the sole purpose of cooking.
And generators have also been banned, with exceptions for those required for documented medical conditions.
The measures are in place for at least the weekend, with the province providing an update on Monday.
