MUN students who wish to become primary or elementary school teachers in rural Newfoundland and Labrador will soon be able to do so remotely.
The rural education cohort program will launch in winter 2026.
It will be offered as a second degree to students pursuing a career in rural education in order to learn and work closer to home.
It will be offered mostly online.
Twenty-five spots are available in the first cohort. The deadline to apply is next Monday, though further applications will be accepted if seats remain.
Dr. Pamela Osmond-Johnson, Dean of the Faculty of Education, says they do get calls from people who want to become a teacher but don’t want to leave home, which is why they wanted to implement a “stay where you’re to, we’re coming where you’re at” approach.
She says they want to capitalize on the talent that’s in rural areas, recognizing that a lot of people have ties to their communities that make them not want to leave.
