NDP leader Jim Dinn has committed to publishing all MHA conflict of interest disclosures online if his party forms government.
Dinn says in eight other provinces, conflict of interest disclosures for elected officials are posted online where they can be easily accessed.
However, in this province someone must make an appointment and travel in person to the Office of the Commissioner for Legislative Standards to view the document.
Dinn says people are not allowed to make copies of the disclosures, and have to take handwritten notes of what they are reading, which makes it hard for anyone to verify the information. He says the system is “challenging enough” for people who live on the Avalon Peninsula, but it is even more profound for people living in other areas.
He says the NDP would implement an online system where people can access the information in real time, without having to “jump through hoops.”
