Instead of going for the fresh section at the supermarket for your protein-based foods, it may be an idea to look at the centre aisles.
Despite the elimination of the carbon tax on fuel, the cost of food just seems to keep going up. Beef was one of the first products to become unaffordable for some, but now staples such as chicken also cost more.
Sylvain Charlebois of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University says canned goods can be a less expensive substitute.
“Canned tuna and canned salmon are being used as loss leaders, meaning they’re losing money on them, but it’s an effort to get shoppers back into the middle of the store,” says Charlebois.
“Prices went up because of the counter tariffs but those tariffs are gone now.”
