The Ontario provincial government is banning the use of speed cameras, but in Newfoundland and Labrador the traffic enforcement tool is only just getting established.
Earlier this year four new speed cameras went live and started issuing tickets to speeders on the Veterans Memorial and in school zones on Waterford Bridge Road and at Larkhall Academy.
The provincial government says 210 tickets had been served by registered mail as of September 25th. While the process has been delayed by the recent labour dispute at Canada Post, tickets can be issued up to one year after the date of the offence.
While in Ontario, Premier Doug Ford considers the tickets issued through traffic cameras a “grab,” in Newfoundland and Labrador it’s seen as a way to make roads safer.
The newly-elected government says it is committed to complete the installation of the first 10 cameras and will assess the effectiveness of the program and determine other opportunities to improve road safety.
