A cheque presentation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation was made this morning on board HMCS St. John’s.
The money was raised by crew members who participated in the annual Run the Rock charity campaign.
This year marks the run’s 30th anniversary and today’s presentation brought the total raised for the charitable foundation to $2 million.
Commander Jeffrey Anderson says crewmembers have been participating for years, running across the island each summer and raising money along the way.
He says about 15 or 16 crewmembers run a relay-style race collecting donations for local children with critical illnesses. “The last few years have been banner years,” says Anderson. “Our goal this year and our milestone 30th year was to hit the $2 million mark.”)
They fell just short this past July, but are undeterred.
“While the ship has been deployed since the 13th of July with NATO, the crew raised the last $15,000 or so that we needed.”
