RCMP are offering a few reminders for people to celebrate safely this holiday season and that includes keeping yourself protected from theft and scams.
Christmas is a time for visiting and travel, and RCMP are advising that people lock their homes when away. It’s also a good idea not to leave the empty boxes of high value items visible at the curb.
Whether shopping in person or online, protect your wallet and your purchases by keeping them out of sight and to be aware of your surroundings in busy public spaces.
If shopping online, use reputable retailers and avoid unsolicited links or messages.
And, beware of appeals for donations this time of year. RCMP warn not all requests for help are authentic and make sure the charity or cause you’re donating to is legit.
Ask for the charitable tax number and confirm through the Canada Revenue Agency’s List of Charities online or by phone at 1-800-267-2384.
