The largest town in central Newfoundland is lowering its residential mil rate to help people cope with higher costs, but it’s also taking other steps to help with affordability.
Grand Falls-Windsor passed its 2026 budget this week with a reduced tax rate – to 9.15 from 9.5. Mayor Mike Browne says they lowered rates to reflect an increase in property values – and revenue from property tax.
The mayor also expects to see an increase in housing construction next year over this year.
There were close to 30 starts in 2025 but the mayor expects that number to triple.
