Today’s bitter temperatures will make way for a warming trend – and some significant rain for some areas – later this week.
Environment Canada meteorologist Wanda Batten says significant rain is in the forecast for the Avalon and Burin peninsulas Wednesday night, with brisk winds.
She says those areas could see 20-30 mm of rain over a 12 hour period. That, combined with snow melt could result in flooding and potentially dangerous conditions. Winds will gust to about 80 km/h. The temperature is forecast to rise to plus 6 by Thursday morning.
The temperature will drop back down below freezing by Thursday evening creating slippery conditions.
Other areas of the island will encounter a messy mix of precipitation including rain, freezing rain, snow and ice pellets.
