Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a stark and startling speech to the World Economic Summit in Davos, Switzerland, warning the economic powers that major institutions like the World Trade Organization and the UN are under threat.
Carney’s speech comes as U.S. President Donald Trump continues his tariff threats against former allies opposed to his desire to acquire Greenland.
Carney warned that “a world of fortresses will be poorer, more fragile, and less sustainable” and cautioned against major powers abandoning the “pretense of rules and values for the unhindered pursuit of their power and interests.”
He also reiterated Canada’s commitment to Article 5, which outlines that an armed attack against one NATO member is considered an attack against them all, saying if “we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu.”
“We stand firmly with Greenland and Denmark, and fully support their unique right to determine Greenland’s future. Our commitment to NATO’s Article 5 is unwavering.”
