The provincial government is analyzing the current tax regime to see what taxes and fees are actually costing government money rather than generating revenue.
Finance Minister Craig Pardy says it’s all part of budgetary preparations well underway.
The province is already planning to reduce business tax from 2.5 to 1 per cent as outlined in the PC election campaign.
Pardy says they’re looking at the possibility of cutting other taxes and fees as well, a move they hope will actually help save government money.
He says the previous Liberal government rolled out some 300 taxes and fees and “sometimes it’s conceivable that… the administrative costs exceeds what the tax or the fee would be. So we’re doing an accountability and evaluation exercise…that’s where we are.”
