The premier wants Newfoundland and Labrador to become the ‘Tourism Capital of Canada.’
Premier Tony Wakeham delivered that message to Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador yesterday.
Wakeham says access, working with Marine Atlantic on increased capacity, and extending the tourism season are among the conversations taking place.
That includes winter tourism.
“Being from the west coast, the opportunities that we have on the west coast for adventure tourism – especially when it comes to winter sports – is immense. So we need to…start talking about what we have to offer over there.”
He says the tourism industry represents more than $1 billion to the provincial economy each year and he’s looking at ways government can help the sector grow even more.
“The challenge is, how do we get it to $2 billion? What do we do as a government to support all of these people that are continuing to support rural Newfoundland and Labrador, our small communities and keep industry alive? And that’s what we intend to work with them on.”
