Memorial University’s Students’ Union is considering shutting down a long-time staple that has developed the careers of countless broadcasters and journalists.
MUN Radio, which goes by the call letters CHMR, has been broadcasting for the last 50 years, but MUNSU is planning to bring forward a motion that will bring the station’s long history to an end.
Station manager Rhea Rollman says the news came as a complete shock.
She says they had “no idea” it was coming. She says neither she nor the CHMR board of directors received any official communications about the decision. “It is really shocking.”
She says as manager she was hoping to make the station more autonomous and not as reliant on funding from MUNSU.
What happens next remains to be seen, as she says she’s not sure MUNSU has the legal authority to shut the station down.
