Fuel prices took a significant dip overnight, but many are feeling the pinch of recent fuel price uncertainty….including Metrobus.
Metrobus uses more than 2-million litres of fuel each year and was paying as much as 70 cents a litre more than was originally budgeted.
Last fall, diesel was at nearly $1.50 a litre – but prices this week reached well above $2 a litre.
General Manager Judy Powell says Metrobus purchased 16 new hybrid buses last fall, which is helping to reduce costs and consumption.
Powell says they have no plans to pass added costs on to riders for now, but it may mean some planned projects may be put off.
“This is causing us a lot of concern. We’re keeping an eye on it. We’re looking internally at projects, expenditures, things that maybe we can reschedule or postpone,” says Powell.
“The last action that we want to take is the impact service. That’s certainly not something that we want to do. We’ve planned some service improvements for later this year; those we might need to review.”
