The mayor of Labrador City says they have companies ready to invest in the region but movement is needed on additional power capacity in the region.
The Churchill Falls MOU would have made that happen, but that whole arrangement is currently in limbo as government assesses the deal previously reached between Hydro Quebec and NL Hydro.
Jordan Brown says there are three large projects that would benefit from the construction of a third power line, including the Kami project, Julienne, and Iron Bear, north of Lab West near the Quebec border.
“They’ve been kicking the tires on moving forward with that project and looking for investors, so, right now there’s three potential developments in the next couple of decades, we have people sniffing around wanting to get into this region, but if we can’t have a secure line of power, how are we able to sell it when someone says ‘I can build it,’ but we can’t turn it on.”
