Some residents in the Town of Stephenville have been advised to evacuate after a historic military munition was turned in to the local detachment.

The item was discovered in nearby St. George’s and is currently being stored by police in Stephenville.

Officers went door-to-door to let residents in the Oregon Drive area know about the risks associated with the munition and offer them the option to evacuate.

The item is being monitored and will be disposed of once experts with the Department of National Defence arrive.

The Stephenville detachment is closed to the public for the time being.
