The City of St. John’s is officially observing National Indigenous Peoples Day, previously known as St. John’s Day.
National Indigenous Peoples Day is officially marked with the summer solstice, which was yesterday.
The day was adopted by the capital city to fill the void left when St. John’s Day was no longer observed.
For the rest of the province, today is known as the June Holiday, formally replacing what was known as Discovery Day.
Provincial and municipal government offices are closed today, but it is not a provincial shops closing day, which means businesses and banks should be open as usual.
