The co-author of a recent report into the gender wage gap in Atlantic Canada says, by and large, workplace practices are “not getting at” how different types of work are valued.
The report, from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, has found that the gender wage gap here is one of the widest in the country.
Christine Saulnier says equal pay requires looking at the responsibilities of the job, the qualifications, the effort required and the working conditions.
She says there is enough “systemic evaluation of jobs” now that employers can really look at those factors. She is calling on employers to be more transparent about their hiring practices.
