There was a slight drop in the unemployment rate nationally last month – one-tenth of a point but the rate dipped significantly in Newfoundland and Labrador. Unemployment stood at 8.2 per cent last month, down from 9.6 in May.
The rate in the St. John’s region held steady at 7.0 per cent.
Employment was up among youth by 1.2 per cent and the 25-54 age group, but down by 1.1 per cent among those 55 and older.
The June jobs report will be the Bank of Canada’s last major look at the state of the economy before making its next interest rate decision on Wednesday.
