Premier Tony Wakeham says he will ensure the Innu Nation has the opportunity to showcase their culture “without any disclaimers” going forward.
Last month, the Innu Nation was instructed to remove or alter references to their presence at an exhibit, citing concerns with their references to the nation in Labrador prior to the 1700s.
Officials raised concerns that stone tools and other materials from Innu lands could not be presented as connected to Innu ancestors. Wakeham says he’s eager to get back to the table with the Innu Nation to move forward.
“Right now, we’ve reached out to the Innu and we’ve talked about the opportunity for them to showcase their cultural showcase, which they wish to do, without any disclaimers,” he told reporters.
“I think it’s very important for us to get back to the table on the land settlement agreements. That’s been going on for a long time and I’ve offered to expedite that as much as we can.”
