The minister responsible for the environment and municipal affairs says government is open to addressing concerns raised by the Salmon Cove town council in relation to blue-green algae blooms in waters downstream from the sewage lagoon in Victoria.

The issue has been a recurring problem in recent summers, especially when temperatures climb.

The good news says Minister Chris Tibbs is the algae blooms are not toxic.

Tibbs and his staff met with the local town council last month.

“It does not pose any threat to drinking water, nor does it pose any threat to the environment.” Noting that the problem typically goes away as the temperature drops, he says the water management team is monitoring the situation.

“Make no mistake,” says Tibbs, “we’re actively looking for solutions.”
