Officers with the Canada Border Services Agency at St. John’s International Airport recently seized more than 26 kg of an illegal stimulant from a flight that arrived from London, England.

Khat, or Bushman’s tea, is a type of plant native to Africa, and is usually chewed to get its desired stimulant effects.

It is considered a controlled substance in many countries including Canada.

The CBSA says 136 bundles of the illegal stimulant was discovered in two checked bags belonging to a passenger.

The traveller was denied entry into Canada and the seized goods were transferred to the RCMP’s Atlantic Serious and Organized Crime division.
