Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette is expected to pay a visit to that province’s Lieutenant-Governor today, officially kicking off the Quebec election.

Normally a general election in our neighbouring province would only garner marginal political interest in Newfoundland and Labrador, but arguably, this election is different.

Expect the Churchill Falls agreement announced in St. John’s last week to be among that province’s election issues.

Some questions had previously been raised about the future of the agreement, should Quebeckers choose to elect a new provincial government.

However the separatist Parti-Quebecois, which last week was leading in the polls, is not expected to put the deal, which has yet to be finalized, in jeopardy.

The party’s separatist agenda also appears to have been put on the backburner for the time being given the uncertainty created by the current trade war with the United States.
