Charges laid against two women in connection with a protest at Confederation Building in St. John’s nearly two years ago have been stayed.
The decision was delivered in St. John’s provincial court this morning.
In November of 2024, the group known as Protect NL brought a large, colourful boat into the parking lot of Confederation Building to demonstrate against proposed wind energy development in the province.

After repeated requests to remove the boat, the RNC were called, and Brenda Lee Kitchen and Jennifer Whiteway were arrested and charged with unlawful occupation of government property.
The judge concluded that the arrests were “unlawful,” and that the women’s Charter right to not be subject to “arbitrary arrest” was breached.
The charges against Kitchen and Whiteway have been stayed.
