People who build and renovate home and property say the new tariffs will have a significant impact on all aspects of their industry.

Canada will be targeting a long list of items which it imports from the U.S., many of which go into construction.

Kelly Rogers, the executive officer with the Newfoundland and Labrador Homebuilders’ Association, says costs will go up and there will be delays in both renovation projects and new home construction. The industry already copes with shortages in the skilled trades.

“We also have regulations which affect the affordability piece of home construction,” said Rogers, “We need to build more homes as we are in a housing crisis and this will only make things worse. We hear the word ‘uncertainty’ all the time, and that is definitely a huge challenge that we’re facing.”
