The usually bustling St. John’s International Airport was somewhat solemn this morning as YYT marked 25 years since the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Dozens of first responders looked on as the airport reflected on the tragedy, which diverted nearly two dozen aircraft to St. John’s alone.
The ceremony highlighted how the airport and the city itself responded when thousands of “come from aways” were suddenly stranded in the capital.

Airport CEO Dennis Hogan says staff at YYT spent many sleepless nights working to help passengers who were left in limbo.
“In the airport community in this province and even the wider Atlantic region, this is a point of pride for all of us who work at the airport and hopefully a tragedy of this scale would never happen again, but I think we’d get the exact type of response if it did,” he told reporters.
