Outspoken Innu advocate Simeon Tshakapesh has asked Indigenous leaders not to accept the current Churchill Falls deal as it stands, saying the agreement repeats many of the same mistakes of the 1969 agreement.
Tshakapesh was one of many people who gathered on the steps of Confederation Building yesterday to protest the new Churchill Falls agreement.

He says jobs, economic benefits, and the overall value for Labrador are among his concerns.
“I think they should be concerned, not just elected officials but all the constituents, all the membership of the Innu Nation, band memberships. I think they should reconsider because it’s not a good deal,” says Tshakapesh.
“I’ve been talking to real-world experts and professionals about these deals. They’re warning me that this is not a good deal for Labrador, for the Innu of Labrador.”
