Players in the local aquaculture industry are celebrating the positive impact the sector is having on the province’s economy.

Cold Harvest 2026 – the largest aquaculture conference in Canada – is underway at the JAG Hotel in St. John’s.

The province’s seafood industry – including food produced through aquaculture – topped $2 billion in market value earlier this year.

Aquaculture production reached a record high of 37,480 tonnes last year, nearly double that of the previous year.

The chair of the Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association and Vice-President of Marine Operations with Ocean Trade Canada, Sheldon George, says the overall feeling is positive.

“Our government is supporting us,” says George, noting the presence of both the provincial and federal fisheries ministers.

“It’s all about our food security and producing a sustainable product. Just positive vibes on growth.”
