Pictures of a recent wildlife encounter on the province’s west coast has got people talking.
Nikita Compton, a firefighter with the Deer Lake Fire Department was out for a ride with her boyfriend in the Goose Arm area (in Moose Management Area 5) Monday evening when they encountered two coyote-like creatures in the road.
Compton, an experienced outdoorswoman says her immediate impression was that the animals were juveniles.
She says even though the animals weren’t small, she knew right away they were young because they were giving off “puppy vibes. I could tell right away they weren’t adults.”

Eventually two more came out of the woods and stood in the road – curious about them and their dog which was barking from the back of the truck.
Compton says people are speculating that the animals were wolves or some kind of a hybrid, pointing to the large fluffy ears, but she believes they were coyotes.
She says at least two of the animals had big, fluffy ears, similar to pups. The other two which came out after may have been older, and had different ears.
