The Parti Québécois may have won last night’s election in Quebec, but a reporter with the National Post contends that it was a “bittersweet” win for the party.
The governing CAQ was obliterated in the election, going from a majority government to not winning a single seat.
The PQ will hold a minority government, with the Liberals forming the official opposition and the Conservatives as the third party.
Reporter Catherine Levesque says despite the victory there were a lot of “long faces” in the PQ ranks last night.
She says they were just a few seats short of a majority, and they also lost some seats. She says the PQ wasn’t anticipating the comeback of the Quebec Conservatives, a party which hadn’t won a seat in national assembly in nearly a century, yet was able to “wipe away” the Quebec City area.
The interest in the election in this province stems from the Churchill Falls deal.
The initial concern was that the PQ taking power could mean having to go back to the drawing board, but Levesque says the party has “changed its tune” on the deal.
She says premier-elect Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has promised to look at the deal and bring it to the national assembly of Quebec.
She expects that will pass in the legislature, but exactly when that will happen remains to be seen. She believes Hydro-Quebec will try to put a push on things.
